How to Make Good Decisions as a Christian

Becoming a special educator is one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. It all started with an advertisement one fall day when this flier suddenly caught my eye and read, “Do you want to make a difference?” I knew this was for me. However, my advisor advised against it, but there were no arguments from me because those words resonated so deeply within me they became more than just words; They inspired every fiber of who I am. Deciding is difficult. One wrong decision can wreck your life, or one moral judgment can bring some fulfilling events into your life. But how can we make the best decision as Children of God?

The Bible is our guide to making excellent decisions. In Joshua 24:15, we are told to choose today whom we will serve. We need to decide to follow God. Once we have made that decision, everything else will fall into place. However, sometimes it’s not that easy, and we need more guidance. When we need more advice, we can pray, and God will reveal the answer in the way He knows reaches us the most. The Lord may send someone to show His response to you. Proverbs 16:25 says, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end, it leads to death.” We have all been there. We think we know what is best for us, but it turns out that it was not the right decision after all. This verse clarifies why we must seek God’s guidance in all our choices.

When seeking God’s guidance, He will never lead us astray. So when we are trying to decide, whether big or small, we need to ask God for His input. He will never give us a wrong answer, and His guidance is always for our good. In Psalm 119:105, we are told, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” God’s Word will always show us the right way to go.

We need to be careful, though, because sometimes we can think we are hearing from God when we are not. One of the best ways to know if what you are hearing is from God is to connect the choice with what the Bible says about the character of God. If the decision you are trying to make goes against what the Bible says about God, then it is probably not from Him. However, if the decision you are trying to make is in line with what the Bible says about God, then it is most likely from Him.

We can trust that God will always be with us, no matter what decision we are facing. So seek His guidance and trust that He will lead you in the right direction. Pray about all the decisions you want to make and wait for a response from God. Waiting is the best thing we can do when we want to decide because it shows that we trust in God and not ourselves. Choosing based on our understanding will usually turn out bad because our knowledge is limited. But when we trust in God and seek His guidance, He will never lead us astray. So seek the Lord in your decision today so it can fill your life with joy.
